This is Trollhattan’s contribution for those interested in playing with a Tech 2 scan tool, here's a little info regarding the software requirements once you've got your hands on a Tech 2 handset.
Firstly, I'm by no means an expert on this having only recently got this up and running myself, but I think that's the tricky part. I'd welcome comments on where this post can be improved/altered etc. Most of the information is already out there on various boards/forums but it would be nice to try to bring it together for us with a purely Saab interest.
For those who don't know, the Tech 2 unit (handset) can be used to interrogate the various management modules on the car (ECU) to report status, fault codes and perform manual activation and monitoring in the event of fault occurrences/engine management light occurrences. This in itself is incredibly useful, but it is also possible to reprogram modules within the car to change various functions and add or replace faulty modules and programme keys. Whilst the diagnosis side can be performed standalone, to be able to actually change settings on the car, Tech 2 'Security Access' is required, which means activating the Tech 2 handset via PC software.
The original Tech 2 handsets were produced by Vetronix/Bosch and were used across the GM range. Therefore, the Tech 2 unit can be used on a wide array of cars but you must have the correct model software loaded on the removable PCMCIA card. This is what turns the Tech 2 into a Saab Tech 2. (If you have mates with GM/Suzuki etc cars, you can do diagnosis on them as well by just grabbing the appropriate software card.)
The PC software also adds other functionality such as being able to update the Tech 2 software, the car ECU software, print-outs of ECU data and additional diagnostic services - I believe the TIS2Web actually includes schematic diagrams and other WIS (workshop) info, but I have yet to investigate this.
So, for the software itself, there are two options.
1. TIS2000
2. TIS2Web/GlobalTIS
TIS2000
If you get a clone, this generally comes with a couple of TIS2000 CDs/DVDs. However, these are generally NAO (North American Operations) and do not include any UK/European Saab models. In fact the only Saab this will work with is a 9-7x which was a GM US-built SUV - anyone got one of these??? Anyway, the crucial point is that this software only supports models up to 2007/8 (which is probably good enough for most of us) so if you've a later model you'll need to use TIS2Web (see below). But as I said, this software as supplied does not include Saab models, so to run it successfully:
a) Download Saab TIS2008-2. This is the update disc you need to turn the GM application into something useful. You can find it if you're patient... Best to burn the image to a CD.
b) Install the GM TIS2000 application (needs to be Windows, 32-bit operating system). If supplied with a clone, there are normally two discs. One is the app, the other is the GM update disc, which is not required. If this is the case, install the first disc only but don't run up the application on completion. If you didn't get it with a clone, you can get a copy with the USB dongle for about £15 (see e) below). If prompted to select a registration method, select USB Key and OK the prompts.
c) Insert the SaabTIS2008-2 update disc (or mount the drive) into the same drive you installed the original GM TIS2000 application. This is important as the application will only look for updates at the same drive letter (i.e D:) that was used for installation.
d) Start TIS2000 from the desktop icon/start menu and OK it when it asks to do the update. When the update is finished, you'll have a Saab 2008-2 installation.
e) All that is now required is to activate the software to get security access (enable Tech 2 programming). To do this you'll need a USB key and patch available from the same sources as the clone Tech 2 units. These are around £15 and come with the TIS2000 GM software, or may even be supplied with the unit.
TIS2Web or GlobalTIS
TIS2Web is essentially an updated version of TIS2000 with some additional functionality (I've yet to play properly with it). Some may say this is the preferred option as it's backwards compatible with earlier models and covers up to MY2012. The basic features are borrowed from TIS2000 though. Only disadvantage is it's a bit trickier to get it working.
a) Acquire a copy of the Saab TIS2Web software. Again, this needs to be the Saab version. You can pay less than a tenner for this on the auction site, or you can find it on the internet if you look.
b) Install the software. This takes a little time and, unlike TIS2000 which allows much functionality without activation, you can't do anything with TIS2Web until you've activated it.
c) Open the TIS2Web application. The application runs in a web browser so will open your default browser. This can take some time to open.
d) Once you've got to the registration page, you need to enter dealer information. This can be gobbledegook but I think you need to fill all the fields. Save this and then go to step e).
e) Click on the Email/Fax registration. This will generate a PDF which you should save. The important stuff is the Request ID and the Software Key.
f) To get your activation code, you need to be nice to members on one of a couple of auto diagnostic forums (unless you know someone with a keygen for this). Searching the net for this sort of stuff should bring them up as top search matches. You'll need to join the forum, introduce yourself and politely request a code. Don't upset them, they're helping us out and there's a bunch of knowledgeable people on there so no harm in being a member.
g) Once you have the code, enter it and activate TIS2Web. You're done.
Faultfinding the TIS2Web install.
You may well have a couple of issues getting the software running initially. If your web browser refuses to connect to the TIS2Web service, it's likely that one of the two GlobalTIS services are not running. To fix this, open the 'services' console either by
Start>Run and type "services.msc"
OR
Right-click 'My Computer" select 'Manage' and drill down to the services icon on the left pane.
There are two services that should be running and they've got obvious names, something like GlobalTIS and TC6 (not near my TIS PC at the moment) and sit next to each other in the services list. In the information pane they should say 'started'. If not, right-click and select 'start'. If this fails with an error, try modifying the registry key below.
To open registry editor Start>Run regedit BE CAREFUL MODIFYING THE REGISTRY - YOU CAN REALLY SCREW YOUR PC UP!!!!!
In the left pane, expand the keys until you find the following
HKLM\Software\Apache Software Foundation\Procrun2.0\Global TISTC6\Parameters\Java\JvmMx
Change the value of this key from 0X0000044 to 0X00000200 and exit the registry. Try to restart the service - you should find it now works. Don't ask me why, I got this fix from another forum - fair play to the guy who found it.
Tech 2 Hardware Issues
It's widely reported that the manufacturing quality of some of the clone units can be much lower than the originals and there are reports of issues. I found that the flat grey ethernet cable supplied with my unit was faulty and caused me much confusion until I threw it out and replaced it with a standard network cable. You can check you have RS232 comms using the GM TIS2000 install and going into the Tech 2 View option. Don't mess about with serial port settings etc as if there is a physical connection there it will work without interference. Only pins 4 and 5 of the RJ45 RS232 socket are actually used. The units are also supplied with a loopback adaptor so they can be tested internally.
Occasionally you may find the Tech 2 doesn't connect to the car. Check your connections are secure and reset the VCI module (the thing in the base of the handset held in by the plastic release button).
Wow, quite a long post. I'll add more if necessary. Let me know how you guys get on. Please remember that YOU CAN REALLY BREAK YOUR CARS REPROGRAMMING THE ECUS so be extremely careful, ensure good battery voltage and good connections while uploading data to the ECU. Save what's on there first before you make any major changes.
Again, I'm very new to this myself but thought I'd put this here for like-minded Saab nuts who want to get involved with this stuff. I'm sure there are others on the forum who have much more knowledge and experience with the actual programming and diagnostics.
For now, I'm happy to have disabled the nagging seatbeat chime (am I the only person who likes to let their car warm up before driving off?) and altered the boot lock logic so it doesn't lock itself at every available opportunity. Oh, and I've activated the zap sound so I know it's been locked.
Be careful, have fun.
Cheers!!!!
P.S I have no affiliations with any of the sites/software etc just spent a long time getting this working and wanted to share it to save others the hassle.

C6 Corvette check engine light on, solve with Tech2 clone perfectly
HaveC6 Corvette, last year I did a major engine compartment detail getting our car ready to put in a big Corvette show at a GM dealer and club sponsor. As soon as I started the car after the detail I had the check engine light come on with a fault code indicating "high intake air temperature" WTF? Luckily I had just recently received the Tech2 clone that I purchased and was able to retrieve and clear the code. It has been a year now and no more codes have come up since.
My daughter also recently had an air bag fault code set on her Chevy Cruze that resulted from trying to crank the engine with a low battery that resulted from her kids playing with the dome light and leaving it on. The rapid clicking of the starter solenoid triggered the air bag fault and it required a Tech 2 to cancel that fault as well.
From where to have one Tech2 clone?
You can buy anywhere but is better if have a quality control number on interface Tech2 clone.

How do you think of Tech 2 made in china?
Please advise: what do you think of Tech 2 made in china:
http://blog.chinacardiags.com/tech-2-clone-sp23-b3-sp23-1-sp23-b-sp23-c-confused/
I bought my Tech2 from chinacardiags.com and it works great. Cannot really compare software with a Tech2 as that is comparing hardware to a program. That being said, there is a software side of things that work alongside the Tech2 which is the TIS2000 software. Getting that working is a bit of a project in and of itself as the software is old and seems to work best on Windows XP. The TIS2000software is really not needed to use the Tech2 though - that is needed if you want to update the firmware in the various modules in your vehicle like the ECU, BCM, DDM, etc.
Simply put though. There is no other tool that can do everything on your H2 that the Tech2 can do. It is the only tool with things that are very specific like calibrating the rear air suspension module. Other tools can be very powerful but that are mostly just have features that are common to many vehicles and will not have things that are specific to just one or two vehicles.
I cannot speak for any on Aliexpress. I've seen both good and bad reviews on the ones from there. Also the link you gave just takes me to the Aliexpress home page. Regardless it would not matter as again, I have no way of knowing if one from some seller on there will be a good one or not.
It is also worth spending the extra to get the case which does cost a good bit more. These come with a lot of different adapters and parts and the case makes it very nice and easy to keep it all together.
This is the kit that I ordered. It also includes the Candi module which is needed for many newer model GM vehicles.

How to install Mongoose Pro GM 2 GDS2 Tech2Win
Mongoose Pro GM 2 manual: how to install and how to use
Note: here we’re talking about Mongoose Pro GM 2 china clone (also name Mangoose)
How to install Mangoose Pro GM 2 software:
1.Install VMware-player-6.0.6-2700073.exe

2.copy "GM Ⅱ" to harddisk.
3.open "XP_EN" with VMware Player

How to install GDS2 Tech2Win for Mongoose Pro GM 2:
Here are my photos!
Step 1, open Tech2Win, use the default image.
Step 2, open GlobalTIS for Opel v32 and select security access. Get security access. Tech2Win license will refresh and it will unlock Tech2Win so it will communicate with the car. Close Tech2Win.
Step 3, plug in the Mongoose Pro II GM and plug the other end into the car.
Step 4, open Tech2Win. Select the Saab BIN that you set up (do this on your own)

Step 5, Tech2Win prompts you to use the Mongoose, so, use the Mongoose.

Step 6, you will see the Saab 9.250 NAO splash screen. Notice the license expiration says <1 instead of 0, and you will not see any "circle with a line through it" through the Tech2 picture, the MDI picture, etc, because Tech2Win is unlocked.
Step 7, get some security access

Step 8, wait for Tech2Win to do its thing, and give you the prompt:

Step 9, use TIS2000 to get security access. Turn "off" Tech2Win using the power button in the GUI, which basically resets the software. Fire up TIS2000 and select Get Security Access. Note, you may have to adjust the baud on the serial connection, I had to drop mine a bit before things played nicely. Also, unplug the Mongoose while you are doing all this nonsense.

Step 10, BOOM you got yourself some security access. If you got this far, celebrate!

Step 11, plug the Mongoose cable back in, hit the power button and restart Tech2Win. You are good to go, you have full security access. Feel free to do whatever you want! Here is me jacking around with some of the diagnostics. I used this same software to re-program the BCM on my 2008 9-3 CV. It works.

Step 12, SPS! Close out all this crap and open GlobalTIS for Saab. Open SPS. Plug in Mongoose. Basically, it just works. It will show up in the list as an available adapter. Follow the directions. Here are some pictures of me updating the ECU for my 2007 9-3 2.0T to eliminate the idle dip problem I occasionally experienced.

Most of what I wrote omits some tips and tricks but was designed to show, yes, this tool works, its compatible 100% with 2003+ 9-3SS for sure, and I love it. I don't know how I put up with the Chinese junk. No more time bombs. Plus this setup works for my 2007 Yukon XL Denali. If I buy a car with the Global A electrical platform, the Mongoose is certified to work with GDSII also! So it's pretty much future proofed.
Here are some more random photos of my setup and of the Mongoose plugged in and...Mongoosing?

My recommendation? If you are the least bit handy with computers, buy this thing and never look back.
Cheers!

Clone Tech2 scanner purchased-Very pleased
Well, after reading hundreds of posts here and elsewhere on these Tech2 scan tool's I just had to get one. I learned tons from all the guys that have also purchased these from here on CF and thanks to you guys for giving your buying experiences good and bad. Too many names to list here but I'm sure I read every post here concerning these units.
I have my C6, 07 2500 GMC, 09 Cobalt that it will work on. Have another scan tool for our foreign cars.
Surprises were, this thing is bigger than I thought. It's a foot tall by 6" wide. It needs the velcro straps it comes with.
Shipping was a shocker. China to Cincinnati in two days. Ordered it Sunday evening, they processed it quickly, shipped it Monday morning and it was sitting on my front porch today, Wednesday by noon.
I bought without plastic carton. $250.00 total, free ship to USA by DHL.
Tested it on my GMC truck and all seems fine. Connector for older OBD1 as well for 91-95,6 too. Latest software for GM 33.004.
I need to dig up the post on the storage case a member here bought from HF. It looked to be a perfect case for this unit.
The memory card works in either slot, I tried both although the disc says to install in upper slot. It's a tight fight because the spring loaded door doesn't quite open enough for the card to slide in easily. I got it in with a touch of prying. Not a big deal.
Entire purchase process was easy with no problems at all. It is a great scan tool kit for not much money. Time will tell how it holds up long term but from other members reports they are getting years out of them.
Sorry about the lousy pics.

That is the case but the black one. Has better dividers and foam. A few bucks more.
Chinacardiags.com, Super Obd Store. As usual there are many vendors there that all look alike.
And I have SP23-1 http://www.chinacardiags.com/wholesale/tech2-diagnostic-scanner-for-gm-saab-opel-suzuki-isuzu-holden-with-full-package.html
But he has a lot. Look here:
These are THE GM scan tool for GM cars and most trucks only from early OBD1 91-92 up to MOST 2013 OBD2.
They read, clear, help diagnose error codes and problems. They read any control module on the car. Most of the other scan tools only read engine and some ABS codes. I am reading the users manual now to learn just what all it can and can't do.
The GM service manuals always refer to the Tech2 for further diagnosis on any error code whether it be engine, trans, ABS, body, chassis.
The 33.004 GM software is the latest and last update for these tools.
GM is moving to MDI for 2014 and up.
I used high dollar Snap-On scanners all my shop life and while they were top of the line they had some glitches and updates were $800-1000 a shot plus the $3900 to buy the tool in the first place.
But, any scan tool only gives you info and data, YOU have to take that info and data and make the correct repair based on that data. People sometimes think that a scan tool will tell you exactly what the problem is, where it is and how much it cost to fix, not true as you have to be able to use the error data with the troubleshooting tips to plot your repair.
But without these scan tools and you have a 'check engine' lite on you will be throwing darts in the dark as far as wondering what the problem is. The scan tool will guide you on where and what the problem is based on the actual error code # and definition.
It is nearly impossible to correctly diagnose any dash error warning light on any vehicle without a good scan tool.

Tech 2 .BIN files restore: genuine Tech2 PCMCIA or generic ATA card
So, some of us have attempted to restore .BIN files onto blank cards. Here, i’d like to enlighten you to what the differences are between a genuine Tech2 PCMCIA and a generic ATA card.
Here you go
genuine Tech2 PCMCIA card vs. generic ATA card:
There are two primary types of flash memory architectures: linear and ATA. Both conform to PCMCIA form factors and can be used interchangeably in existing PC Card slots or drivers.
Linear Flash memory stores and sends data in a linear fashion (in Byte or double Byte format). To be able to transfer data into blocks (like ATA technology), so that the card appears like a hard drive, Linear Flash requires a software layer called Flash File System.
ATA Flash mimics the file structure of an ATA hard drive. It features an on-card controller which handles error correction coding, bad-block mapping, dynamic adjustment of performance versus power consumption, extensive self-testing and diagnostics and data access functions. This means that a card with an ATA controller appears like a hard drive to virtually any mainstream personal computer operating system.
In short, the most important difference is:
ATA cards won't work. An ATA card is like a giant sd card or USB drive.
The linear flash cards don't get recognized by the CPU like that.
For me:
- The restoring card:
You can buy generic linear flash cards on eBay for like $70
This is what I did for a spare. Same place I ordered my unit from. Cheaper than eBay.
http://www.chinacardiags.com/wholesale/32mb-card-for-gm-tech2-six-software-avaliablefor-gmopelsaabisuzuholdensuzuki-b-288.html
I used the card making software mce in a laptop, but you can order it from China with the software you want already loaded.
So far, I am happy with it, the card took a few weeks. The unit was 2 to 3 days and a guy recommended them on the duramax forum. I have a duramax and the Pontiac g8. I am happy. Works great, I would recommend again.
- Tech2 scan tool
For the Tech 2, there are 3 different units, look the same.
That is what I found on the site.
SP23-B Best
SP23-C Vetronix
SP23-D Newest
I did the SP23-B. From what I was able translate they are made by different companies but the same....
I went with the best as it was a little cheaper. I am happy with what I got. If I did it again and money wasn't an issue, I would buy one with the American warranty.

Tech 2 doesn't program for H2 above 2007?
"Dear All,
Please advise:
- what do you think of Tech 2 made in china?
- Is there any software close to Tech 2 to be bought which has access to all hummer h2 modules?
Regards, YF"
I bought my Tech2 from chinacardiags.com and it works great. Cannot really compare software with a Tech2 as that is comparing hardware to a program. That being said, there is a software side of things that work alongside the Tech2 which is the TIS2000 software. Getting that working is a bit of a project in and of itself as the software is old and seems to work best on Windows XP. The TIS2000 software is really not needed to use the Tech2 though - that is needed if you want to update the firmware in the various modules in your vehicle like the ECU, BCM, DDM, etc. Please advise:

Simply put though. There is no other tool that can do everything on your H2 that the Tech2 can do. It is the only tool with things that are very specific like calibrating the rear air suspension module. Other tools can be very powerful but that are mostly just have features that are common to many vehicles and will not have things that are specific to just one or two vehicles.

This is ONLY needed if you want to program or update the software in a module. ALL of the build in diagnostics and testing for vehicles up to 2013 works without the subscription or the older TIS2000 software. You only need those for doing actual programming. The older TIS2000 software - that is what has the programming was discontinued in 2007. TIS2000 does have the actual programming for all vehicles up to 2007. After 2007 GM went to the TDS system.
You can also get a newer style MDI or MDI 2 for diagnostics and programming. The catch with those. They have NO screen or built in software and you must pay for a subscription from from ACDelco TDS to use an MDI.
Other brand units, a very select few can do actual programming and use the pass-through method. NONE have the diagnostics that the actual Tech2 or MDI (with the subscription) will have. Check with Autel and see if they have the full diagnostics and re-calibration for the rear air suspension on a Hummer H2. Not going to happen, there is too little demand for them to hack and reverse engineer that particular bit of code in a Tech2 to figure out the diagnostics and then write programming for that for their tool.
For programming you also need to have TIS2000 running on a computer or pay GM for a 24 month subscription for their TIS2WEB (Vehicle Programming) for $40 https://www.acdelcotds.com/acdelco/action/subscribehome
The computer will need a serial port for downloading the programming to the Tech2 for programming your vehicle.
The way programming works is you connect the Tech2 to the vehicle and tell it you want to program a module. It interrogates all of the modules on the vehicle for the current versions and the VIN number. You then connect it to the computer running TIS2000, GlobalTIS, or TIS2WEB subscription and select programming in the computer. It reads the Tech2 for the vehicle info and then presents you with a list of software for all of the modules and shows you which have updated software. I recommend only doing one module at a time which is a good bit more back and forth but safer. The computer then loads the update to the Tech2. You take that back to the vehicle and connect it and it then programs the module.
The best, most reliable and safest method is to use a long enough serial cable (its uses 9 pin serial adapters with an ethernet cable to make the cable longer - so you can just use a longer network cable) and do pass-through programming. In that method the process is the same but you leave the Tech2 connected to both the computer and the vehicle at the same time. Once you select programming on the Tech2 then go to the computer and you can immediately update each module right from the computer.
There is a slightly more updated version of standalone TIS2000 floating around on the web which has additional updates that has software updates for vehicles through 2009 as well. I know just using that TIS2000 both my GMC truck and my 2003 H2 both had a bunch of software updates available to be programmed all of which fix small issues or improve certain aspects. One example in on the older single compressor air ride like my 2003. Those would run and make small adjustments a LOT more often than needed and the software update fixed that. On the H2 the rear air ride is also one to be very careful of for doing software updates though. For example, my 2003 came with the earlier style single compressor but if it were to fail a dealership would replace it with the newer style dual pump compressor. Programming would still think its the original style and would attempt to program it and that would actually cause it to fail. TIS2000, (Global, Web, etc) will warn you about this sort of thing though so just heed all warnings and follow instructions and its fine.
The programming aspect is not needed or required to use the Tech2. The Tech2 still gives you a TON of diagnostics and tests that NO other OBD device has including things like the air ride module, detailed BCM functions, basically you can control and test every computer module in the vehicle.
